Karlsruhe (Germany), 4th-5th March 2010: Writing in English - A Workshop for Scientists and Engineers
The training centre (FTU) of Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) is organising the workshop “Writing in English - A Workshop for Scientists and Engineers” in Karlsruhe (Germany) on 4th-5th March 2010.

When writing an article for a magazine or journal, drafting a report to submit to a government department, writing an FP7 proposal or any other proposal to an evaluation committee, it is essential to use correct English grammar and vocabulary. It is also necessary to write in a style that is clear and accessible to the intended reader so the article, report or proposal ‘does its job’ properly.

The workshop will focus on how you can prepare yourself for writing in an effective and professional way. Participants will learn how to analyse, review and optimise their writing in English to ensure that it is presented in the best way possible.

The workshop is specifically designed for scientists, engineers, research managers and all other staff who have to write articles, reports or proposals in English. It is limited to 12 participants. The level of English should be intermediate and above. This course is not suitable for beginners.

Individuals are asked to bring their own portable PC to the course to fully benefit. They are also asked to send a copy of a publication or report in advance for the preparation of the tutor.

European Union. PRO INNO Europe Report sheds light on innovation and Framework Programme research

The DG Enterprise’s initiative PRO INNO Europe has released a report, shedding light on the link between publicly funded research and innovation. The report, “The impact of publicly funded research on innovation: analysis of European Framework Programmes for Research and Development” is an output of the Innovation Impact (INNO IMPACT) study. It examines the link between research, technological advancement and innovation with a focus on collaborative R&D projects funded by the 5th and 6th European Framework Programmes (FP5 and FP6).

The report suggests that projects driven by commercial objectives from the outset are more likely to lead to product innovation and technical knowledge creation. In order to enhance the link between FP projects and innovation, the study also provided recommendations based on the analysis.

This study is different from other evaluations of Framework Programmes in that it concentrates on innovation and research by examining managerial, project, firm, and market-related factors that influence the extent and speed of the commercial exploitation of FP5 and FP6 project results.
