- Leading Questions:

This question rarely elicits any new or valuable information. Its primary use is to reinforce what the interviewer already knows or thinks. The danger of this questioning is that it sends to the applicant the answer the interviewer is seeking. An example of a leading question is "Ours is a customer service-oriented agency. Do you regard customer service as important?" It sends the applicants a pretty clear message that if they want the position, they should respond affirmatively, and it doesn't give the interviewer the right information to judge the applicants' abilities. A better question might be: "Tell us about your experience in handling customer complaints?"

Leading questions are valid for dealing with sensitive areas that an applicant is hesitant to speak about or for empathy. For example, "You must have been upset about being dismissed without notice." The answer you receive may give you valuable information for gauging feelings about the issue and finding out what may have happened.
10. Interview Evaluations

It is best to evaluate an applicant as soon after the interview as possible while observations and impressions are still fresh. The key to successful interview evaluation is to know the job, its requirements, and what you are looking for in advance of interviewing. Review notes and documentation and clarify or amplify any information that may be important to the selection decision. Evaluation should reflect the applicant's skills, abilities, and performance factors measured against those required for the position. Complete the interview evaluation or rating form.

There is a variety of methods for evaluating an interview. The most legally defensible method is one in which each applicant is evaluated on the same criteria. Based upon the interview questions that were developed, a rating method can be established that would measure an applicant's response against one or more acceptable responses. If more than one response is acceptable, each possible response must be given a separate point value relative to the most acceptable response. It can range from a very simple rating such as "+, 0, and -" to more complex ratings weighting certain responses with given numbers of points. The scores of each interviewer are then combined to form a list of applicants' ratings in rank order.

When evaluating an applicant's responses to interview questions, keep in mind that evaluation means finding past examples and present demonstration of abilities in order to predict future performance.



  • Evaluate the applicant's responses against the requirements of the job.

  • Cite specific evidence to support ratings or evaluations.

  • Be as objective as possible when assessing an applicant's strengths and weaknesses.

  • Avoid the most common biases:

  • Personal biases or stereotypes - based on how we think people of a given age, race, affiliations, etc. should appear, think, feel, act, and respond.

  • "Halo" effect - the interviewer tends to credit an applicant with too many positive attributes based on one strong point on which the interviewer places high value and underestimates the negative characteristics.

  • "Person like me" effect - the interviewer perceives traits similar to their own as desirable. This may overshadow the negative aspects of the interview.

  • "Devil's horns" effect - the interviewer finds a particular characteristic of the applicant that is unacceptable. The applicant then is presumed to have no positive attributes and is downgraded in all areas on the evaluation.

General recommendations

Before starting to write your curriculum vitae, remind yourself of a few important principles:


Take care over the presentation of your CV

Set out your qualifications, skills and competences clearly and logically, so that your specific attributes are easily seen.



Give proper attention to all relevant detail, both of substance and presentation; there is no excuse for mistakes in spelling and punctuation!

Concentrate on the essentials:

  • a CV must be brief: in most cases, two pages are enough to show who and what you are. A three page CV may be considered too long in some countries, even if your work experience is outstanding.

  • if your work experience is still limited (because you have just left school or university), describe your education and training first; highlight work placements during training (see online examples);

  • concentrate on essential information that brings added value to your application: work experience or training which is old or not relevant for the application can be omitted.


Adapt your CV to suit the post applied for

Systematically check your CV every time you want to send it to an employer to see if it corresponds to the profile required; highlight your advantages according to the specific requirements of the prospective employer.

A good knowledge of the company will help you tailoring your CV to the appropriate profile.

Take care: do not artificially inflate your CV; if you do, you are likely to be found out at the interview.
Keep to the structure of the template

The Europass curriculum vitae allows you to present your qualifications, skills and competences in a logical order:

- personal information;

- description of your work experience;

- description of your education and training (which may appear before the heading ‘Work experience’ for users with limited work experience; to invert the order of the two headings, use the ‘copy/paste’ command in your word processing software);

- detailed inventory of your skills and competences, acquired in the course of your training, work and daily life.


Notes:

- print your curriculum vitae on white paper;

- retain the suggested font and layout;

- avoid underlining or writing whole sentences in capitals or bold: it affects the readability of the document;

- do not split an entry under one heading over two pages (e.g. your list of training courses) – to avoid this use the ‘page break’ command in your word processing software;

- the boxes containing the various headings should not appear when the document is printed.


Be clear and concise

Your profile must be appreciated by the potential employer after a few seconds’ reading. In consequence:

- use short sentences;

- concentrate on the relevant aspects of your training and work experience;

- explain any breaks in your studies or career;

- remove any optional heading (e.g. if you have no ‘Artistic skills and competences’ (see page 2 of the template) or if you consider that such skills and competences do not bring added value to your application, remove the whole entry using the ‘cut’ command in your word processing software.


Have someone else read your CV on completion

Check your CV carefully once you have filled it in to remove any spelling mistakes and to ensure it is laid out clearly and logically.

Letter of intent
How to write a letter of intent
Determine the name and address of the right person to receive the letter. You do not want to address the letter to "Department Head" or worse yet, "To Whom it May Concern." Unless the letter is directly addressed to the right person, it is not likely to get read by that person. A quick phone call to the institution or place of business can usually get you the information you need.
Write the letter using the proper business format. This is not a casual, friendly letter. It needs to look professional. Use a simple font such as Times New Roman or Arial.

Introduce yourself in the first paragraph of the letter. Include what year you are in school, what school you currently attend, and any information that is pertinent. For example, if you are writing to the basketball department of a school, it would be appropriate to mention that you are the captain of your high school basketball team.
Next, describe why you are writing the letter. Describe how you first learned about the school or program, and how you became excited about it.
State your credentials. Tell the reader why he should consider you for this school/program. This can be in paragraph form or a bulleted list of your accomplishments. Be specific and be honest.

V současné době jsem zaměstnán jako účetní asistent ve společnosti CurrentCompany. Ucházím se o tuto pozici vzhledem k tomu, že mám dobré schopnosti a odborné znalosti v oblasti finanční a účetnictví, jak bylo požadováno ve Vašem inzerátu. Eğitim geçmişime ve kişisel özelliklerime uygun, şirketinize değer katabileceğim bir pozisyonda çalışma isteğimi iletmek istiyorum. Özellikle satış, pazarlama ve Pazar araştırması konusunda katkı sağlayacağımı düşünüyorum.

2007 yılında MARMARA ÜNİVERSİTESİ İşletme Bölümü’den mezun oldum. Eğitimim süresince kendime temel işletme yönetimi, satış- pazarlama ve pazar araştırmaları konusunda geliştirdim. İçinde yer aldığım projeler ve stajlar sayesinde takım çalışması ve proje yönetimi konularında kendimi geliştirme fırsatı buldum. Ayrıca, üniversite eğitimim sırasında ileri düzeyde İngilizce öğrendim. Özellikle problem çözme, kriz yönetimi ve uzun vadeli düşünebilme yeteneklerimin ve insan ilişkilerinde empati ile yaklaşımımın çalışma hayatımda yardımcı olacağını düşünüyorum. Kısa vadede, eğitim geçmişimin ve kişisel özelliklerimin yardımı ile şirketinize değer katmayı; uzun vadede ise kendimi geliştirerek yükselmeyi hedefliyorum.
