4. Борбите на ап. Павел
Принципите изложени дотук са явни в живота на Павел, в който виждаме радикално скъсване с греха при неговото обръщение, когато среща възкръсналия Христос по пътя за Дамаск и започва да споделя възкресенския живот на Исус. От враг на благовестието той се превръща в последовател на Христос. В същото време никога не достига и не претендира за нравствено съвършенство. Плътта продължава да му нанася удари. Много от стиховете по-горе, за борбите със Сатана, са извлечени от личните му преживявания (ІІ Кор. 10:4 и сл.). Павел продължава да е притесняван от трън в плътта, пратеник от Сатана. Той признава нуждата си от постоянни притеснения, за да го пазят от възгордяване. А за да не се превъзнасям поради твърде многото откровения, ми се даде трън в плътта, пратеник от Сатана, да ме мъчи, за да не се превъзнасям. (8) За това нещо три пъти се молих на Господа да се махне от мен; (9) и Той ми каза: Достатъчна ти е Моята благодат; защото силата Ми се показва съвършена в немощ. И така, с голяма радост ще се похваля по-скоро с немощите си, за да почива на мен Христовата сила. (10) Затова намирам удоволствие в немощи, в укори, в лишения, в гонения, в страхове заради Христос; защото, когато съм немощен, тогава съм силен (ІІ Кор. 12:7-10). В Деяния 23:1-5 се разказва за греховната реакция на Павел, след като първосвещеникът заповядва да бъде ударен през устата.
И Павел, като се вгледа в Синедриона, каза: Братя, до този ден съм живял пред Бога със съвършено чиста съвест. (2) А първосвещеникът Анания заповяда на стоящите до него да го ударят по устата. (3) Тогава Павел му каза: Бог ще удари теб, стено варосана! И ти си седнал да ме съдиш по закона, а против закона заповядваш да ме ударят? (4) А стоящите наоколо казаха: Божия първосвещеник ли хулиш? (5) И Павел каза: Не знаех, братя, че той е първосвещеник, защото е писано: „Да не злословиш началника на народа си.”
Във Филипяни 3:12-14 апостолът обобщава своето отношение.
Не че съм уловил вече, нито съм станал вече съвършен, но гоня, дано и аз да уловя, защото и аз бях уловен от Христос Исус. (13) Братя, аз не считам, че съм уловил, но едно правя – като забравям задното и се простирам към предното, (14) гоня целта за наградата на горното призвание от Бога в Христос Исус.
