Програма на чешкия център

Подбор от най-интересните студентски анимационни филми направени от 2000 г. насам в ЧР. Чешкото анимационно кино е известно с традицията си в тази област в цял свят. През последните години се засили интересът за обучение в специалност “Анимация”и в момента съществуват много възможности за това. Несъмнено най-силна позиция в чешкия анимационен жанр все още държи ФАМУ (пражката Филмова академия) и работите възникнали на неин терен извървяват най-кратък път до зрителя. Поради тази причина нашият подбор е ограничен с филми възникнали извън ФАМУ – представяме Висшето професионално полиграфическо училище в Ихлава, Частното висше професионално филмово училище в Писек, Злинската филмовата школа в Университета “Томаш Батя”, специалност класическо анимационно творчество и Висшия институт за приложни изкуства, специалност филмова и телевизионна графика.

Главният критерии при избора на филмите е сюжета, на второ място владеенето и използването на анимационна техника, оригиналността, въображението, свежият остроумен подход.

В рамките филмовия фестивал София Филм Фест 2010 Чешкият център ще представи цикъла от документални филми на чешкия режисьор Ян Шикъл “Частно столетие”. Поредицата представя историята като интимни човешки случки. Основният източник за сериите са аматьорски семейни филми, засягащи съдбите на тесен кръг от хора. Днес тези ленти ни представят свидетелствата на спонтанния частен живот, а всички отразени събития придобиват по-значими, универсални човешки измерения.

Цикълът “Частно столетие” се състои от 8 филма, всеки един с продължителност 52 минути ( http://www.ceskatelevize.cz/specialy/soukromestoleti/ ).

На 14-то си поред издание, най-големият български Международен кино фестивал ще представи чешкия филм “Протектор” на режисьора Марек Найбърт, сценарият е на Роберт Гaйслер, Бенжамин Тучек и Марек Найбърт, в главните роли: Марек Даниел и Яна Плодкова. Филмът вече беше показан на няколко форума от световна величина, в това число Лондонския филмов фестивал и Международния филмов фестивал в Палм Спрингс. Печели наградата за най-добър игрален филм в Денвър.

“Филмът “Протектор” е инспириран от нашата история. От съдбата на конкретни хора взехме само определени мотиви...Още от самото начало нашият филм има само няколко общи неща с Хайдрих. В названието “Протектор” метафорично се съдържа идеята на цялата случка...”, казва режисьорът Марек Найбърт.

Радиорепортерът Емил и киноактрисата Хана са семейство. Началото на войната и немската окупация обръща тяхното съществуване наопаки. Неочаквано е разкрито еврейското потекло на Хана и от висините на стремглаво растяща кариера тя пада на дъното на обществената стълбичка. Въпреки своите убеждения, за да защити съпругата си, Емил минава на разположение на немската пропаганда. Договорът с дявола обаче взима своята цена – Емил загубва себе си, превръща се в алкохолик и женкар. Съдбата му подготвя капан – при бягство от любовницата си открадва чуждо колело, което подкарва с всичка сила. В този момент от радиостанцията звучи съобщението, че е извършен атентат срещу райхспротектора Хайдрих, а един от извършителите е избягал от местопрестъплението карайки дамско колело...

Сборникът “Чехи в България. Ролята на чешкото присъствие за българското национално развитие” е издаден от издателство “Валентин Траянов” в края на миналата година. Съдържа доклади и материали от едноименната конференция, която беше организирана от Чешкия културен център в сътрудничество с Чехословашкия клуб “Т. Г. Масарик” през месец май 2009 година. Традициите на чешко-българските отношения датират още от далечното минало, но най-силно се проявяват в края на 19 век – след Освобождението на България от турско робство. В годините 1878-1908 г. се поставя началото на значителния чешки принос за модернизацията и европеизацията на България. Темата на конференцията е именно ролята на чешката интелигенция през този период, когато редица чешки интелектуалци пристигат да помагат на младата българска държава във всички области на обществения, културния и икономическия живот.

Фотографският проект “Градът” е представен за пръв път в галерията “Вацлав Шпала” в Прага и съдържа 50 голямоформатни фотографии, представящи индустриалните белези на чешката столица и на други европейски метрополии. В София ще бъде показана половината от цикъла, разделен на две части – панорамни снимки, направени в периода 1997-2002 г. с фотоапарат Noblex и по-стари фотографии (1992-1996 г.), при които авторът изцяло е използвал фотоапарат със силно чувствителна лента, чрез което постига по-голяма естественост на образа. Повечето снимки са от пражките периферни квартали – Либен, Модржани, Холешовице. Бицан умишлено избягва класическите картини на туристически атрактивни пражки доминанти, но не се стреми да документира и изчезващия “стар свят”, който постепенно отстъпва на новото строителство. Интересува се по-скоро от местата, които му предлагат повече пространство за заснемане, места които са по-близки към абстрактното, отколкото към документалното.

The creators of these images are the renowned Czech photographers Štěpánka Stein and Salim Issa and they are also responsible for the overall concept of the exhibition.

A selection of the most interesting animated student films that have been shot at Czech schools since 2002.

The Czech Republic plays an important role in the creation of new trends in animation. In recent years the interest of Czech and international students in Czech schools for animation is at an all time high and more and more educational options have become available. FAMU, as the most prestigious film school, holds the strongest position for recognition and the work that comes out of its doors will therefore have an easy way to go to reach an audience.

The Czech cultural centre is proud to present a selection of animated films, therefore, focusing on works created in the schools outside FAMU: Graphic Art College in Jihlava, Independent Film College in Písek, Film School Zlín, and Prague Academy of Art, Design, and Architecture.

Libor Šmoldas has successfully headed his own trio and is now establishing a new quartet with piano, drums and bass.
"I have always wanted to have a band with a pianist. I believe now, when organist Ondřej Pivec, who I used to play with in my trio, has left to New York, it's the right time for me to make a new project with a brand new programme.”
The band’s repertoire comes from two sources - Libor's own original pieces and music arranged from the 1960's Broadway play My Fair Lady by Frederick Loewe. Šmoldas on arranging music:
“I first got the idea when I realized that one of my favourite songs “I’ve Grown Accustomed to her Face” has its origin in My Fair Lady. I purchased myself the soundtrack of the film version, and after some time of listening to the record over and over again, the arrangements of certain tunes popped out on mind. Another reason for working with My Fair Lady music was what I read in an article by Brad Mehldau - the idea of arranging songs directly from original score or original recording. Usually when you arrange a piece, you’ve known it from somebody else's arrangement, who'd heard the tune adjusted by someone else and so on. During this process the song loses small details, sometimes can be changed more. So if you arrange the original version of the tune, you know the arrangement will really pour out of the song the way the composer wrote it, and the new version will be your own, not the copy of somebody else’s version. For me it was big fun to arrange the music this way."

Czech centre and Sofia Film Fest present: PRIVATE CENTURY

Our lives are unique and unrepeatable. The "Private Century" series shows history as a set of intimate human stories. Their intensity resonates with everyone because the fundamental events can happen in the lives of each of us.

The sources for the film cycle "Private Century" are amateur family films. This material was in the time of its creation an exclusively private matter concerning only a small group of people. It however has grown to become a unique testimony of spontaneous private lives. It is a probe into intimate family niches. The "Private Century" cycle is free of the ambition to present self-contained historical views. Its aim is much more modest: to stop time. Within the "Private Century" the private memory becomes public. All the meanings in the film acquire much wider and more universal humane scope. The "Private Century" shows the history as a set of intimate human stories.

The "Private Century" consists of 8 films, each 52 minutes long and are presented in Czech with English subtitles, and live interpretation into Bulgarian. The director, Jan Šikl, will be present at all screenings.

The story is narrated from the point of view of little Eva who recollects her memories of a Velichovky farmstead and mainly her parents: Daddy and Lili. The private films present us with an intimate view of their life and the relationships within the family.

Velichovky lay on the Czech-German boundary. Saisser was a successful farmer there. He had three daughters. Lili was the oldest. She was beautiful and vivacious. She fell in love with a young doctor from Prague and spent several happy years with him. Little Eva remembers the years they spent together in Velichovky and Prague to be the happiest time of her life even though the war had started. During that time Little Eva became very fond of wartime hit “Lilli Marlene” which she associated with her mother. However the sweet life in Praque charmed Lili so much that she became increasingly separated from her family. Eva became closely attached to her father whom she loved dearly and never called him anything but “Daddy.”

The end of the war and arrival of communism brought more turmoil into Eva’s life. It proved even more dramatic than the war.

A view into the family background of composer Václav Felix from the 1930’s to the 1980’s. It shows the sequence of events and context in which Václav’s politically involved procommunist attitude was formed.

Václav’s emotional relation to his parents was extremely strong. He saw his father as a great model which he stove to imitate and his mother as a protector from whom he sought understanding. However, since 1948, Václav’s personal life began to unwind in connection with the political situation in Czechoslovakia. Václav fully identified with the ideology of the communist party. His support of the party also determined his private, personal decisions such as the choice of his life partner and cooling of his affection towards his father who had been imprisoned by the communists. The political ideology also had an impact on his musical work which he had chosen as his profession. He found refuge in his hobby - collecting butterflies. The ups and downs of his life enable us to observe from what roots Václav’s worldview grew and the reasons why he kept it.
9.3. 18h. SMALL RUSSIAN CLOUDS OF SMOKE

This film narrates a story of the Popov family who settled in Prague and became one of the prominent families of the pre-war Russian emigration to Czechoslovakia.

Russian emigrant Vladimír Dimitrievič Popov and his family settled in Czechoslovakia in 1920's. Life's turmoil was captured on his cine-camera and offers a unique testimony of life 70 years ago.

Cigarette making machines that were Popov’s invention secured a decent living for him. Popov was successfully managing his work and he strove to do the same with his family, mainly his daughters Gali and Marusja. The personalities of his two were as different as were their lives. While the amiable one, Gali, adapted to the Czech environment well and settled there, resistant Marusja sought her own way and in the end she returned to the Soviet Union.

A story from 1960's and 70's of the relationship between Káťa and Franta who was an ace fighter pilot in the Czechoslovak army.

Káťa was captivated by Franta. He was not only an attractive man but was also a purposeful and determined personality. Therefore she tolerated his career of fighter pilot in the Czechoslovak army. She, with the family, accompanied him on his study stays in the USSR. They start to alienate each other because of Franta’s fondness of alcohol and the marriage gets ruined. Franta’s fighter pilot career soon ends with his unfortunate death.
10.3. 18h. KING OF VELICHOVKY

This film is an authentic story of Karel Saisser who lived in Velichovky on the Czech-German boundary in 1930's and 40's. Karel Saisser was a farmer by heart and soul. He owned fields and woods and was very successful. Everything he earned got reinvested into the farmstead. He also liked to live well. He kept horses for pleasure and made car trips to Prague or Berlin… His life in Velichovky was for him a dream-come-true.

His wife and three daughters (Lila, Edita, and Ria) lived happy lives as well. Each of them married according to her wishes: Lila married a Czech doctor, Ria a German clerk, and Edita a German general.

Velichovky lay in the Sudetenland and the Saissers were German. Everything in their lives was half Czech and half German. None of them had any proplems with that until the end WW2 came. The whole family was deported to Germany.

This film is the story of sculptor Vincenc Havel who lived in the Opava region of north-Moravia in the 1950's. His film memories are a set of images that nicely depict this interesting personality which is firmly anchored in the milieu of 1950's.

Vincenc was a nonconformist and eccentric who could not get along with anybody and who was always struggling with everyone in his surroundings. He was a sculptor. In the beginning of 1950’s he made a sculpture of Klement Gottwald. The work however brought him not only the acknowledgement by the state but also a lot of envy. Therefore he retired into his house where he also built a studio. His house served him as a fortification from the outside world. He was equally uncompromising in the upbringing of his daughter. The difficulties that had originated in this relationship were a heavy burden for him later on. His whole life was for him a fight for appreciation but it would not come.
11.3. 18h. SEE YOU IN DENVER

The life story of each of us is unique and unrepeatable. The "Private Century" shows history as intimate human stories. The fate of two generations of the Hvanhara family depicted from the 1920's through to the 70's is an apt reflection of the fate of Czechoslovakia of 20th century.

František was born in the Žižkov neighbourhood in Prague. His father was the founder of a film distribution company and a network of cinemas. American slapsticks and Westerns formed the world in which he grew up. The stories from the pre-war cinemas influenced František for his whole life. "See You in Denver" was a quotation of their favourite heroes and was how they, as boys, used to say good-bye.

When his father lost his business after the WW2 and the Westerns disappeared from the screens, Fratišek with his friends started to shoot films themselves. The Westerns always featured the duel of the good and evil. As František used to say, he always tried to stand on the right side. His life credo and optimism was not destroyed by the ban on his studying, nor his groundless imprisonment. However, the lack of freedom and intolerance of the regime placed František in opposition. And when 1968 came he decided to emigrate over the ocean to visit all the places he had heard so much about as a child; to make his childhood dream come true.

History is a mosaic of unrepeatable human destinies. Another part of the cycle "Private Century" deals with the 40's and 50's of the last century. The source of narration for this life story are the private film archives of the Šlechtl family.

Marie and Josef met at the grammar school in Tabor. Josef was son of renowned Tabor photographer Šlechtl and because of this Marie got to know the environment of their family studio. Taking photographs and filming became a part of her life. The loving relationship of Josef and Marie can be felt in the first shots they took.

The second half of 1940's for Josef and Marie was a time of rebuilding the photographic studio which they inherited from his father. This also included the care of a large photo-archive. Their work involved visits with president Beneš who had a villa in nearby Sezimovo Ústí. Josef and Marie felt that they had their luck in their hands.

The early years after the communist coup the relationship of Josef and Maria was still stronger than the politics-charged milieu they lived in and which they managed to suppress from their lives. However, in the end the times hunted them down. At first it was the nationalization of their studio then later the state trumped up charges for a trial against Josef all because the communists expected to find compromising materials in the family photo-archive. Their story is accompanied by affectionate correspondence between imprisoned Josef to Marie sent from the jail. It shows their defiance to the absurd era in which Josef and Marie had to live.

In order to protect his Jewish wife, Hana, journalist Emil builds a career as a collaborator in a Nazi-controlled state radio station. This schizophrenic situation has a fateful effect on his marriage. Slowly Emil´s love changes into a cynical "protectorate" of its own. Emil cheats on Hana with other women and increasingly compromises himself with the occupiers. Not until a chance encounter in the chaotic days after the assassination of the country’s SS protector Heydrich, with a suspicious-looking bicycle that may have been involved in the attack, is Emil able to find himself and his lost love for Hana.

The story takes place between 1938 and 1942. Radio, the bicycle of resistance, paratrooper Kubiš, love, morphine, and a mythical phantom of the days of the Protectorate in Prague all play indispensable roles.

The project features 20 large-sized photographs with Prague motives. The exhibition consists of two parts: the first is a series of panoramic pictures taken between 1997-2002 with a Noblex camera and the second part are older photographs taken with a 35mm cine-film camera. Most pictures were taken in the Prague peripheries such as Libeň, Modřany, or Holešovice; the author purposefully avoids depicting attractive tourist destinations. Rather than documenting the "disappearing old world" that is to give way to newer building projects, he is interested in locations that visually support abstraction of objects.

The exhibition will also feature a video projection of the author’s latest works.

Tomáš Bican (born 1973) studied at the Prague School of Photography. From the very beginning, he has been attracted to cities' urbanized landscape. Throughout the years, he has been developing a characteristic style and constantly changing form by using different cameras. His first decade belonged fully to the 35mm cine-film which he used together with high-speed film to achieve a "crudeness". Later he switched to a Noblex to create the collections from Ulan Batar, Argentina, Russia, Morocco, and India. In the last three years, he uses the Hasselblad camera and is slowly moving to portrait and staged photography.
