Volunteering for the Red Cross Youth Bulgarian transcript: Дидо: Аз съм Дидо и съм от Варна, и съм доброволец в Червен Кръст, по-специално в младежката организация. То това е едно, така, по-особено място във Варна, понеже в България доброволчеството все още не е особено развито и като цяло за нас е нещо ново, понеже в България, излизайки от соц-периода, доброволчеството е нещо много странно и подозрително. Във Варна Червен Кръст е голяма организация и си работи доста близко с доста училища, от където основно си набира доброволци. Интервюиращ: Горе-долу на каква възраст е младежката организация? Дидо: Основната... младежката организация е от 14 до 30 години, но 30 години – принципно няма вече толкова големи членове, понеже хората вече са по-зрели, трябва да се заминават с работа, или ако имат семейства вече не могат да се занимават. И по-голямата част доброволци са от 15 до 18, тъй че до 20 и няколко, но повечето хора когато станат студенти нямат време за занимавания. Но интересното е, че голяма част от доброволците заминават да учат извън страната и просто физически няма как да са. И е едно интересно място, където всички лидери на екипи до областния координатор на организацията са доброволци и са избирани от други доброволци-членове на организацията. И така малко текучество и саморегулация и човек може да се научи да действа сред хора на своята възраст и ако покаже съответните качества как може да бъде лидер на някой екип и да се научи да води хора, което на моменти не е толкова лесно. Интересно за младите хора е, че точно отиват в Червен Кръст на една много (мухи) на една много млада възраст и общо взето разбират някои основни неща от друга гледна точка и се опитват да помагат на хората. Въпреки че едно от основните неща, които ни събира заедно са точни излизанията и партитата с хора от организацията и винаги са незабравими. И понякога, в смисъл, това са нещата, които най-много запомняш, в смисъл готините преживявания с хора… …някоя кампания, или обучение по някоя от нашите теми като превенция на наркомании, ХИВ/СПИН или обучение по първа долекарска помощ, излизането с приятели на по бира или на кафе са незабравими. Особено, всеки е направил някаква изцепка, след това няма начин да отидеш и да говориш пред 20 или 30 абсолютно непознати свои връстника, които през полошината време ти се хилят, и да ги укротиш е много интересна работа. В смисъл, няма начин да не излезе някаква абсурна случайна случка, която да разправяш в последствие. И така малко израсваш в една, така, малко по-особена среда, където хората не че са толкова осъзнати, но може би малко повече от другите. English translation: Dido: I am Dido and I am from Varna, and I volunteer at the Red Cross, at the youth [part of the] organization, in particular. It [the Red Cross] is a special place in Varna because volunteering as is not very well developed in Bulgaria and is generally a new thing for us, because during the period of post-socialist transition in Bulgaria, volunteering is [viewed] as something very strange and suspicious. Red Cross in Varna is a big organization and it works closely with many schools where it mainly recruits volunteers. Interviewer: What is the age in the youth organization approximately? Dido: The main youth organization is for 14 to 30 year-old [volunteers], but generally there are no members who are as old as 30 because [those] people are more mature and have to make time for their jobs, or if they have [started] a family1 they cannot be engaged in [Red Cross activities]. The majority of the volunteers are between 15 and 18, or up to their twenties, but most people do not have much time to dedicate when they go off to college. The interesting thing is that a big part of the volunteers leave to get their education abroad and they cannot physically be [there]. [Red Cross] is an interesting place where [everyone] from the team leaders to the regional coordinator of the organization are volunteers elected by their fellow volunteer members of the organization. So there is some fluidity and self-regulation, and one can learn how to work with people their age; and if one demonstrates the required qualities of being a team leader, they can learn how to lead people, which is not so easy at times. What is interesting about young people is that they join Red Cross at a very young age… and they gain an understanding on essential issues from a different perspective and try to help others. Despite all of that, one of the main things that keeps us together [as a group] is going out and partying with people from the organization, they [parties] are always unforgettable. And sometimes [as it turns out] those are the things that you remember the most, that is, the awesome experiences with people… [portion of the footage inaudible] […] some campaign or training on one of our topics, such as prevention of drug abuse and HIV-AIDS or first aid training; going out with friends to get coffee or beer is unforgettable. Especially when someone has messed up [during training or campaigns], there is no way for you to speak in front of 20 or 30 people your age that you do not know and who are laughing, getting their attention is a very interesting job. That is, ridiculous stories always come up, and you talk about [those things] later on. And you gradually grow up in this very special environment where people are at least a little more aware of themselves than others.
