SUMMARY
Dominant tree height, defined as the mean height of the hundred biggest trees per hectare, has the advantage of being insignificantly influenced by the thinning intensity, and thus it is used not only to estimate the site quality, but also to characterize the stand development stage. Defining the relationship between the mean and the dominant height would greatly facilitate the estimation of the dominant height for practical purposes. The purpose of the present study is to examine and compare 10 most probable functions for expressing the relationship between mean and dominant height, to reveal the most adequate model and its practical applicability for estimation of the dominant height of Scotch pine plantations in Rila mountain through their mean height.

The regression models were examined by F-test and t-tests for significance of the regression coefficients and their adequacies were compared by the standard error of the estimate, Akaike’s information criterion, test of the residuals and the symmetric criterion of Williams-Clut. As result of the tests the parabolic function (y=ax2+bx) was found to be the most adequate. It is applicable for estimation of the dominant height of Scotch pine plantations through the mean height, for all densities and forest sites in Rila mountain, in the range of the heights studied.

Key words: dominant height, mean height, allometric relationships, examination of the regression model
