Wood Carving in a Difficult Economy

Bulgarian transcript:

Interviewer: We are currently at the International Fair of Arts and Crafts, how about the rest of the year, do you have your own store?

Petko Petkov: Well, I have my own business, but I also have frames [like the ones] which you can see here, that have been distributed to stores so people can buy them. Also, I get a lot of requests on my web page. Currently, I am working on an iconostasis1 for one village in the Tulbihin – the Dobrich region. And it just so happened that my daughter is also doing wood carving, my son-in-law is doing wood carving, so we have become a big group now and we have finished [working on iconostases] two churches in the Dobrich region already. We are now working on a third one. And we are charging lower prices, because the economy is down right now.

Interviewer: How did the [global] financial crisis affect you?

Petko Petkov: [Things] are not good, not good.

Interviewer: Is it [the financial crisis] affecting you?

Petko Petkov: It is affecting us too, the orders just dropped. Before, I used to gather up to 15 tapestries at home, like, to make frames [for them]. At the moment, I have one or two orders, they just dropped.

Interviewer: Can you feel that the economy is picking up, or not yet?

Petko Petkov: No, no, not for now. It’s difficult, it’s very difficult. But I am not going to give up my craft, it is in my soul and there is no quitting. I can work… I need five-six hours of sleep and then I can work all day without a problem. My work is very engaging and brings me joy. In general, I enjoy things that are more complicated and I find them more interesting2, because the pleasure that you get out of completing [a difficult project] is something… [amazing]. Also, when one creates beauty, people who buy my wood carving and bring it home – they enjoy it.

Interviewer: Yes. Would you like to add anything?

Petko Petkov: To wrap it up, what [can I say], I can only wish for good health for myself and I hope that I will be able to practice my craft for years to come, so I can achieve greater perfection, and most importantly, leave something behind through my work that will bring people joy.

Interviewer: Thank you very much.

Petko Petkov: Yes. Thank you.
