Students Living with Parents Bulgarian transcript: Адриана: Здрасти, аз съм... казвам се Адриана, на 23 години, уча... завърших икономика и в момента работя в една банка и възнамерявам да уча магистратура в чужбина. Интервюиращ: Популярно ли е, много ли хора учат магистратура след като завършат или не много? Адриана: Всъщност доста хора, защото в България е много важно да имаш висше образование. Има доста университети в България, между другото, и общо взето има място за всеки, има много специалности. Интервюиращ: Така, Нан? [Интервюиращият се обръща към Миряна с галеното й име]. Адриана: Цени се. Миряна: Аз съм Миряна, от Варна съм, също съм на 23 години. Уча във ВИАС1 архитектура, още не съм завършила и все още не работя. Интервюиращ: А ВИАС е...? Миряна: ВИАС е, УАСГ се нарича още, това е, където се учи всичко свързано със строителство, архитектура, за инженери, пътно строителство, да. Интервюиращ: Тоест, от престижните [университети]...? Обаче в много градове няма университети. Затова, например, хората пътуват към Шумен, към Варна идват много хора, към София най-много, в Пловдив също има университети. И ако учиш там, няма как, трябва да живееш сам. Ако си в своя град си с техните – с вашите. Адриана: По принцип и самите родители искат да живеят с децата си и общо взето да се грижат за тях докато могат. Това е някаква такава особеност за България. Интервюиращ: Глезят ли ги до по-късно? Миряна: Глезят ги. Адриана: Общо взето да. Просто семейната единица е такава в България. Интервюиращ: Да. А примерно, младите хора кога започват да работят? Тийнейджърите кога за пръв път имат работа и си изкарват парите? Или просто родителите ги издържат до по-късно? Адриана: Ами различно е. По принцип в България може да си намериш работа доста преди 18 годишна възраст, но тя ще бъде неквалифицирана работа. Понякога много често се случва да експлоатират младите хора в тази насока, защото просто е необходимо [да се работи]. English translation: Adriana: Hi, my name is Adriana, I am 23 years old and I study… I got a [Bachelor’s] degree in Economics and I am currently working at a bank, and I plan on getting my Master’s Degree abroad. Interviewer: Is it common for many people [to choose] to get a Master’s Degree after they graduate from college, or not that many? Adriana: Actually, a lot of people [choose to do so] because having an education is very important in Bulgaria. There are many universities in Bulgaria, by the way, and there is a spot for everyone in general, there are many programs of study. Interviewer:Alright. Nan? [The interviewer addresses Miryana by her nickname]. Adriana: [Education] is valued. Miryana: I am Miryana, I am from Varna, I am also 23. I go to HIACE [where I am majoring in] Architecture, I have not graduated yet and I do not have a job yet. Interviewer: What is HIACE? Miryana: HIACE, also called UACEG is a place where one can study anything related to civil engineering, architecture, [fields] for [other types of] engineers, transportation engineering, yes. Interviewer: So is it one of the prestigious [universities]? Miryana: Well, the most prestigious in those fields. Interviewer: Can you tell me a bit more about young people in Bulgaria, for example, how long do they live with their parents? Miryana: I think that in Bulgaria we choose to live with our parents for a while. Perhaps while we are in college it is easier to live with your parents, that is, if you go to college in your hometown. However, many towns do not have universities. That is why people travel, for example, to Shumen, a lot of people come to Varna, and the greater part [goes] to Sofia, there are universities in Plovdiv, too. And if you go to college there, there is no other way, you have to live by yourself [without your parents]. If you are in your hometown, you are [live] at your parents’ [house]. Adriana: In general, the parents themselves like to live with their children and care for them while they can, broadly speaking. Interviewer: Do they pamper them later [in life]? Miryana: They do. Adriana: Overall, yes. That is just how the family unit is in Bulgaria. Interviewer: Yes. And when do young people start working for example? When do teenagers have their first job and earn their own money? Or do parents support them financially for a while? Adriana: Well, it differs. Usually, you can find a job well before 18 in Bulgaria, but it is going to be unskilled labor. Sometimes… it is quite often for [employers] to exploit young people in that regard, just because it is necessary [for them to have a job].
