Милена: ...че във българските гимназии, за разлика може би от тези във Съединените Щати, всеки е във един клас със 24 души, които... със които те са от първата година, от 8ми клас, през следващите 5 години от своето образование. И заедно със тези 24 или 5 души, те стават едно семейство и на това се дължат много близките връзки, които ние във България постигаме точно във гимнацията - това са приятелствата, които остават за цял живот, и със които продължаваш да поддържаш връзка дори във университета, и... както е точно нашия случай. Докато във университета вече всеки се... всеки във зависимост от своята специалност следва различни пътеки. Друго... в гимназията също, тъй като ние сме възпитаници на гимназия, която е с обучение на английски език, което означава, че ние изучаваме някои от предметите си на английски език, освен много дълги часове, които... (шум от градски транспорт). Това е автобусът, със който сме ходили всеки ден до гимназията си! Интервюиращ: Чухме го! Милена: Чухме го. И всъщност е много, много, много изнтензивно обучение, което тече на английски език: запознаване със цялата култура - и американска... Пaлва Цонкова: Мхм. И всъщност интензивно е обучението по всички предмети и затова учениците от Първа езикова гимназия - Варна успяват във всички университети и колежи по света да влязат като предпочитани бъдещи студенти, защото имат, имат ... доказателство има за качеството на учениците и всъщност самите колежи и университети изпращат съобщения за бъдещи ученици евентуални да продължат да кандидатстват във Щатите и във Великобритания, тъй като всички ученици се представят отлично. Като споменах Коледа и Великден, правим винаги изложба-базар, защото събираме пари не само за деца, които не могат да си позволят много неща в нашата гимназия - защото има и такива - но и даваме част от парите за операция на някой ако се наложи, или за... по домовете изпращаме пари. English translation: Milena: First, about the atmosphere… Interviewer: Okay, yes? Milena: …in Bulgarian high schools, perhaps as opposed to those in the United States, [every student] is part of one class of 24 people who… with whom they take classes together1 from the eighth grade2 throughout the next five years of their education. And those 24 or 25 people, they become a family, and hence the very close friendships that we, in Bulgaria, establish right then in high school – those are the friendships that last for life, and you continue to keep in touch with [those friends] even in college – just like our own case [the speaker is referring to her own friendship with the interviewer]. However, at the university3, students follow different paths depending on their majors. Also… in high school – we are alumni of a high school with instruction in English, which means that some of our classes were taught in English in addition to the long hours of …. (noise from the public transportation). That is the bus that we took every day to our high school! Interviewer: We heard it! Milena: We heard it. And it is actually a very, very rigorous education that happens in English: learning about the whole culture – also American [culture]… Pavla Tsonkova: Mhm. Actually, our education is rigorous in all subjects, and that is why students from First Language School - Varna are admitted as preferred prospective college and university students all over the world, because they have… there is evidence for the quality of our students, and actually colleges and universities themselves send us messages regarding possible prospective students who would continue to apply [to colleges and universities] in the States and in the UK, because of the excellent performance of [our] students. And they are [represented] in all [kinds of] national competitions – in biology, chemistry – in recent years, [our students] have been first-place winners in Bulgaria – also in mathematics – so it is not [the focus is not on] just the languages – English as the first foreign language, and German as the second. They [students] are excellently prepared; also, they have strong preparation in sports. In addition, [our students] demonstrate great tolerance when it comes to underprivileged children – we have such children at our high school, and we do have special facilities for those children, and they are also… [students] also grow up in [the spirit of] compassion towards children from the Mother and Child Orphanage Home – because we have such… a sort of tradition to care for those children – not simply to bring [gifts] to them on Christmas and Easter. Speaking of Christmas and Easter, we always organize fundraisers to raise money not only for the children who cannot afford many things at our high school – because we do have such [children] – but we also give part of the money away for surgeries – in case that someone needs it – or we send money to the orphanage homes. That is why the terms freshman, sophomore, junior and senior are not applicable to Bulgarian high schools. Instead, students from the five different class years are referred to as “eighth grade”, “ninth grade”, “tenth grade”, “eleventh grade” and “twelfth grade” students. 3 Undergraduate education in Bulgaria happens in universities and the concept of college in Bulgaria is usually connected to two-year colleges, or even some high schools. While the interviewee is talking about her university experiences, she is referring to her undergraduate studies.
