Visions International - Translations of modern poetry from Balkan languages

Our critically acclaimed world journal is looking for new unpublished translations of poetry from the Balkan area.

Visions-International has just completed 25 years of publishing poetry from all over the world. We regularly publish poetry from the Balkans and have done several special issues/collections from that area, including a special collection of poetry from all the Balkan nations in 1995, and special issues on Bulgaria, Romania and Macedonia. Most issues contain at least a few modern poems from the Balkans.

All submitted poetry should not have been previously published in English translation and not submitted elsewhere.

International Society for the Study of European Ideas and University of Malta, Foundation for International Studies - 'The European Mind: Narrative and Identity', July 24 – 29, 2006, Malta
Application deadline: April 15, 2006

We live in an age of mass production of narratives. The prophecy of the European thinkers of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, prescribing a paradigm for the creation of narrative, has become a reality. The result of the mass production of narratives is the leveling of all narratives, posing a challenge to authority. One 'grand narrative' after another is discarded, leaving the European mind longing for a unifying narrative that crystallizes the European identity.

The 10th international conference of ISSEI, to be held in Malta in 2006, invites scholars from various disciplines such as History, Politics, Literature, Arts, Philosophy, and Religion to examine the European Identity and the multiplicity of narratives in the age of globalization.

New Journal 'Bulgarian Journal of Science and Education Policy'

There is an idea to launch a new academic journal entitled 'Bulgarian Journal of Science and Education Policy' (BJSEP) and we would like to hear from people interested in contributing in the following ways: I) as co-editors; II) as members of the editorial/advisory board/peer reviewers; III) as active authors; IV) as sponsors.

The aim of the journal is to provide a medium for communication among the persons conducting or using research on secondary and post-secondary education. The BJSEP adopted as its purpose the advancement of knowledge on education through the dissemination through publications, learning meetings and other expert services. The main goal of this activity is to popularize the necessity of rearrangements of the Bulgarian education and higher education system. The analysis shows that such changes are to be of high priority for Bulgaria at the moment. The reform is the only way to make the Bulgarian University system consistent to the contemporary educational systems abroad. Such development would enhance the regional co-operation in South East Europe and would facilitate the establishment and consolidation of the Bulgarian civil society that is a requisite for security and stability of that part of Europe. In order to realize this aim, a comprehensive understanding of the present s! tate-of-art in the field of education should be achieved.

The mission of BJSEP is to facilitate and promote, by means of comprehensive partnership and programs, the creation, dissemination and application of research of exemplary quality in primary, secondary and post-secondary education in all over the world. Certainly the main focus is on the Bulgarian educational system but the critical materials on the educational systems in other countries are also welcomed.

Education and research belong together. This short sentence expresses the very university idea. Without high-level research a higher educational institution seems to be a useless surrogate. In the condition of mass education this explicit assertion is not easy to be understood and even accepted. The new journal will emphasize on this fact. On the other hand research is just the heart of science. The science advances and flourishes when research is managed in a proper manner. That's why BJSEP will deal with the research policy, research management and planning. These topics have great influence on the policies in industry, government departments, universities, and in the whole society. We will seek manuscripts examining the interaction between the problems mentioned with the economic, social, political and industrial processes; the latter being still obscure in a country in transition like Bulgaria.

BJSEP is a multi-disciplinary journal that is international in scope and reaches an audience of academia, government policy makers and all others interested in these issues. The articles appearing in BJSEP should be indexed and abstracted in Sociological Abstracts and other appropriate secondary sources.

British Council - UKanSEE.org Youth Portal

The UK-SouthEastEurope Forum is a British Council regional programme run jointly by offices in Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Kosovo (UN Administration), Macedonia, Romania and Serbia and Montenegro. Initially, the programme will run for two years, starting from Spring 2004. It aims to build alliances between the next generation of leaders from the UK and the countries in Southeast Europe (SEE), as well as within the SEE itself. The Forum will contribute to creating future advocates for the UK and the SEE countries in an enlarged European Union. It runs under three parallel strands People and Politics, Creative Industries and Youth Action.

Youth Action theme aims to establish a network of new generation youth leaders in the UK and the SEE countries who will work actively to enable other young people to gain better understanding of the social and political context in SEE and the UK, increase their motivation and confidence to practice active citizenship, improve practical skills in leadership and entrepreneurship and enrich their educational experience by working in an international context.

The UKanSEE Youth Portal project, developed within the Youth Action theme of the Forum, will offer young individuals, primarily those from countries taking part in the UK-SouthEastEurope Forum programme, the opportunity to communicate with each other and organise and develop an online community with the following objectives:

· To provide an online resource of information on the UK and the SEE in areas relevant to youth;
· To promote new, innovative and exciting methods in informal education and learning through a network of young activists; future leaders and decision-makers, communicators, thinkers, philosophers, travellers and artists;
· To promote mobility of young people through promotional activities and campaigns;
· To act as the main contact-point for Youth Action participants;
· To act as the main communication platform for Youth Action project groups;
· To increase the recognition of the British Council's work in the wider public, especially its dedication to using new, exciting and innovative ways.

UKanSEE will also serve as a contact-making tool to generate potential for other possible joint activities. The portal will provide its service completely free of charge and will entirely be in English.

The volunteering section will include different types of texts - long articles, short announcements about incoming events, interviews, etc.; photos are desirable. All topics are related to volunteer work, including internship and competitions, such as the debates and contests organized by Junior achievement. An Online Archive of Primary Sources on the History of East-Central Europe for Educators, Students and Scholars

The site is administered through Cornell's Institute for European Studies and the Einaudi Center.

Some of the features of the site are:

* over 80 primary sources already available (and that number is constantly
growing at an average rate of about two per week)
* many sources are original translations of rare primary sources (newspaper
articles, court documents, etc.) by scholars in the field of East-Central European history
* access to the cite is free and will always be so
* no dead links - we do not post a source to our site if we do not have
permission to store it permanently
* a straightforward system of organization
* each source includes a brief description and key word list so it can be easily searched with the website's engine
* the texts can also be searched in full-text form using the D-Space engine

The site will also - by the end of this academic year (2005-2006) --be home to a 10,000-page digitized collection of primary sources (in Polish) relating to Polish Solidarity.

We want to make this site a central clearinghouse for sources relating to East-Central Europe for all to use, so if you have sources already online, translations that are in the public domain, or sources for which you own the copyright that you would allow us to add to the site, please contact us.

One way we have found to involve students in the project is to assign them

the task of locating and annotating a source themselves that is then posted
to the site. This way their efforts can be made useful to the larger academic community and they can receive credit for the work they have done. If you would be interested in contributing to the site's permanent collection as part of a course assignment, please contact Holly Case for more information.
