11c. Свети Стефан (по улица Мена) (музей) или Новата митрополия са от ХІ - ХІІІ в. 11th cent floral patterns frescos. Удължена на запад 16в. Трикорабна базилика, изградена от каменни блокове и тухли. Изографисана през 1599 г. Запазени иконостас от края на ХVІ в. и резбован архиерейски трон и амвон от края на ХVІІІ век. All inscriptions in Greek – BG Church was subdued to the Greek Orthodox Church. In the construct – Grave stones; Columns and Marble plates from Roman, Greek times.
Marble iconostases – also from the original construction.
Donor’s inscription above the south door allows the frescos to be dated to 1599, when the Bishop of Nessebar, Christopher, and the whole Black Sea coast region provided money for the church to be enlarged and repainted.
14c. St. John Aliturgetos Church - “Aliturgetos” – in Greek “non-consecrated” – Неосветена
Picturesque Style (carried out to perfection) - Byzantine or Bulgarian style
Roman – bands of dressed white stone & red bricks – “Opus Mixtum”
Ornamental – blind arches, blind niches, colorful ceramic plaques.
This style of church building known as
A builder fell and died while construction. According to Church Canon such place could not be used for worship.
Fortress Wall running by the church went 45m into the sea.
Amphitheater– in the corner of the surrounding walls. Used nowadays for performances like the amphitheater in Plovdiv.
13-14c. Church of Christ Pantocrator - “Pantocrator” – in Greek “Almighty” – Вседържател
Best preserved picturesque style. Belfry added over the narthex in 14th cent.
1960 – Reconstructed; only the north wall is original
Swastikas made of bricks on eastern wall – Eastern symbols – good-and-evil perpetual fight
Acoustics – earthenware pots built-in by the master-builders
